Where Are The Australians, Crowd?

Consequent to a game of cricket played for a little over four days at Mohali, three things transpired from it - 1) Haroon Lorgat's lament,Express India 2) India's massacre of Australia,Biggest by Runs and 3) good friend Scorpi gained opportunity to narrate to us an Australian fan's awestruck discovery of the real world, or almost real world.CricketFizz That's a lot from a game of cricket and best begin with the game.

Like all recent victories India has registered, this one too bore the same characteristics. If one were to try and pick out the match-winner as per the usual India tradition, it would take one ages and much hair-splitting semantics without a convincing conclusion. That's because everyone contributed throughout the game, his important mite, towards the greater collective good of all

India has successfully launched its first mission to the Moon.

The unmanned Chandrayaan 1 spacecraft blasted off smoothly from a launch pad in southern Andhra Pradesh to embark on a two-year mission of exploration.

The robotic probe will orbit the Moon, compiling a 3-D atlas of the lunar surface and mapping the distribution of elements and minerals.

The launch is regarded as a major step for India as it seeks to keep pace with other space-faring nations in Asia.

Raj Thakre trumpet of Bihari migrant

Recent related post (Feb 11, 2008) is: Mumbai political Tamasha (drama) .

In recent 1st anniversary function, Raj Thakre said to Bihari migrant “Behave correctly”.
He seemed very aggressive about migrant worker from north India.
I will only say instead of raising such voice he should do something about poor in south Maharashtra (Vdharva region). He and their parent party must not distract people attention from their failure in tackling the real issue. He with his parent party is in Municipal Corporation from last ten years. He just one year before parted way from Shiv Sena. So he and their parent party were in a position to do something for them or at least raise voice for them.

In Vidarbha region thousands of farmers have committed suicide and still doing so. Vidarbha region are demanding separate state. Is that the reason for not giving head there? If yes, may be they also become migrant in eye of Raj Thakre and Shiv Sena.

Just few months back in Municipal election they have asked for votes from all section including Hindi speaking voters. Now after only two months they are behaving like this.

Raj Thakre must get lesson from Nitish Kumar (Current Bihar Chief Minister), who after becoming CM said, “I will work under constitution, and not work against any one due to personal reason. (They are referring to past Bihar CM, who is famous for mitigating the image of Bihari people. If Nitish Kumar have done bad or tried to do some bad then probably people of Bihar has also supported them against past Bihar CM).

No insurance cover for Chandrayaan-1

MUMBAI: India’s most ambitious space programme, the Chandrayaan-1 project, which aims to send a spacecraft to moon, will lift off on October 22 without any insurance cover. The cost of India’s first unmanned mission to the moon is Rs 386 crore, including Rs 100 crore for establishing Indian Deep Space Network near Bangalore that would receive the signals from the satellites.

An Indian Space Research Organisation official told ET from Bangalore that as Chandrayaan-1 is a scientific project, it would not require any insurance cover. “We have not taken any cover for this project,” S Satish, spokesperson of ISRO said. The Made-in-India rocket bearing the lunar spacecraft will lift off as per schedule provided the weather is right. As per the plan, the 1.5-ton Chandrayaan spacecraft will take approximately eight days to travel about 240,000 miles before reaching its final orbit 60 miles above the surface of the moon. A crash landing of a lunar vehicle on the moon's surface is also planned.

According to insurance officials the cost of insuring space launches is extremely high due to high rate of failure. Also the risk almost entirely reinsured since Indian markets do not have the depth to cover launches on their own. Because of the high rate of failure the premium rates vary between 25-33% of the sum insured. “ISRO has a good track record of launches and can go for self insurance,” the official said.

“In satellite launches, the claims are either zero or 100% since the launch is either a success or a failure,” said Kamesh Goyal, country head of German insurer Allianz in India. Allianz's group company Spaceco based in France which specialises in satellite insurance and has participated in many space programes in the past. Insurance of space launches has been gaining importance because of the growing use of satellite communication in most businesses — ranging from stock exchanges, banks, television channels and telecom companies.

While the satellite launch agency is interested only in the successful launch of the satellite, companies have an interest in the satellites remaining during their expected lifespan. In India, New India has been issuing policies to cover satellite launches right from 1980 with INSAT-2E. However, ISRO has been insuring only those satellites it places using other's launch vehicles such as France's Ariane. It has not gone for a cover for Indian launches. India's last major launch which aimed to place Insat 4C failed in July ‘06 after the Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle developed a snag.

Me panic? I’m not panicking! Who is panicking?

Would someone please remind folks that it’s Friday and we all deserve a relaxing weekend? I for one will be doing my usual Saturday morning Yoga. But it’s nasty out there - the contagion has spread, and panic is now the correct adjective.

The overnight Dow crash hit Asia hard - the Sensex is down at least 9 percent and looks like it’s headed for a holiday south of 10,000, the rupee has hit an all time low and in Japan the Nikkei tumbled another 10 percent. Looks like that decision to let Lehman go bust set off the mother of all chain reactions…and Indian markets may be headed back to 2006 levels.

Zardari says India is not a threat to Pakistan

Pakistan’s new President Asif Ali Zardari is starting to challenge quite a few long-held positions.

India, he told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published over the weekend, ”has never been a threat to Pakistan.” For a country that has fought three wars with India, including one in 1971 that ended in humiliation and the birth of Bangladesh from what was East Pakistan, these are remarkable words.

Indeed for a country that said it would rather eat grass in order to pay to develop nuclear bombs if India did so, the idea that India is not a threat is a whole game-changer.

Is that what Zardari, a businessmen who many see as without the baggage that politicians carry, has set himself to do ? He is even more provocative on Kashmir, speaking of the militant Islamic groups that operate there as “terrorists”.

More- http://blogs.reuters.com/pakistan/category/uncategorized/

Zardari criticised for calling Kashmir militants 'terrorists'

ISLAMABAD: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, chairman of Pakistan's parliamentary committee on Kashmir and president of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, has criticised President Asif Ali Zardari for terming militants operating in Kashmir as "terrorists" and for saying that India has never been a threat to Pakistan. ( See Ninan’s cartoon )

"Zardari is our president but he is inexperienced and needs to know the right choice of words," Rehman told reporters here.

In an interview with Wall Street Journal (WSJ) columnist Bret Stephens, Zardari said the militants in Kashmir were "terrorists", though previous regimes in Pakistan called them freedom fighters. He added that India had never been a threat to his country.

"I believe Zardari's statement that India was never a threat to Pakistan is to have better future relations with the neighbouring country," said Rehman.

In his last press conference, former president Pervez Musharraf had termed the militants as "freedom fighters", saying that Pakistan will continue "moral and diplomatic" support to their cause.

The WSJ quoted Zardari as saying: "I, for one, and our democratic government is not scared of Indian influence abroad."

Zardari also said that he has no objection to the India-US nuclear cooperation pact, so long as Pakistan is treated "at par".

"Why would we begrudge the largest democracy in the world getting friendly with one of the oldest democracies in the world?"

He noted that "there is no other economic survival for nations like us. We have to trade with our neighbours first".

Rehman, who is part of the coalition government in the centre, said he will demand that Zardari change the words he used for the Kashmiri militants.

"I am confident that the president will rephrase his words," he said.

Rehman said that Pakistan considers Kashmir a disputed territory and "Pakistanis have always respected the freedom struggle of their Kashmiri brothers".

Zardari's wife and former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto was accused of removing "Kashmir House" boards from the federal capital when former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi visited Pakistan.

Rehman, who was in opposition then, had stated that Bhutto did so to appease the Indian leader.

India- Furture Of Rahul Gandhi

At present India is focusing on a new leader who is emerging fast- Rahul Gandhi. What impact will Rahul Gandhi have in Indian democracy? Let us try and understand.

The Indian National Congress is full of old politicians who are not known much for their honesty but more for the wily moves they can make. All of these leaders can secure their own parliamentary seat but can make no contribution in getting a majority for Congress in the country.

2 Rahul Gandhi is meeting people around the country and trying to solve their problems. Let us say that he is rather trying to understand their problems. This will give him a vision of what is happening.

3. Today Indian polity is getting sharply divided amongst caste and religion. It is the caste that is becoming a card in the hands of politicians. Arjun Singh is everyday talking about more reservations based on caste. This is not forward-looking thing. But this may get votes. Rahul has not come out openly about his opinion on caste-based reservations.

4. Rahul Gandhi talks of uniting the country with single thought of taking it forward where as the regional party chieftains are making a big impact because of their moves in their states. Mayawati has done that in Uttar Pradesh. How will Rahul Challenge Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh?

5. In Gujarat also Rahul failed to make much impact. And so also with Karnataka.

The problem with Rahul Gandhi is simple. He has a different kind of view of politics and elections. His party members do not understand that. Also to fight the local politicians’ old style politics is needed. Rahul cannot make an impact in the short term. He has to do something like his grandmother to grow in India. This is the reality of India.

India- The Vibrant Nature Of Democray In India

India has thriving democracy. The Indian democracy is said to be very vibrant. With the number of religions, languages, customs in India it is indeed a wonder that India is not only surviving as a country but also thriving. During last one week the members of Indian parliament are crossing over from one party to another at a speed that would surprise the fastest cat. Is this a negative factor or a positive factor?

Most of the commentators are calling this immoral politics. The MPs are changing their affiliation overnight. Yes, it does look immoral. But does this hurt democracy or help it? The first reason of having democracy is to have freedom of choice. Every person in the country must have a choice in everything he/she does. This avoids rule of a single person or a single party. India does not have a two party system. There ate many parties in India trying to represent regional and religious aspirations. Today these parties have a choice and the strength to show that they matter. Many parties with single MPs were forgotten all these years. Suddenly they are being listened to. Their demands are being given attention. Is that bad? I think that it is the best thing that could have happened with these parties. They had no voice and suddenly they find that they are being courted and their demands are getting attention.

When we look at the actions of MPs and call them immoral or moral we tend to forget that people selected these MPs. It is for people to decide whom to elect. If people chose some one the intellectuals sitting in comfortable homes have no business preaching the MPs what to do. The people will do that. Democracy should be for all and should give importance to all. In a house of parliament that has more than 500 members, a single party with majority can always crush the desires of smaller parties. Now these smaller parties are getting a chance to get a foothold. Why call that immoral? This is the nature of vibrancy of Indian democracy. We should let it thrive.

India- Focussing On Press

Is Indian press obsessed with the nuclear deal? is there nothing else that is happening in India? What kind of coverage is being given by the press in India to the following? Let us talk about that.

Draught-

A large portion of country is facing draught. Rain has been playing games and farmers are worried that they will have no water.

Two years of train blast-

today we complete two years of blasts in the trains in Mumbai. Is any body talking about that? No, all the television reporters ate only discussing nuclear deal with all kinds of leaders who seem to enjoy seeing themselves on the tube. Who is worried about the blast victims?

Kabul Blasts-

three days have passed after the Kabul blasts. It seems that it is already a forgotten chapter. As if no body was killed. Only one or two channels gave some coverage. No body else bothered.

Aarushi Murder-

If they can not get a politician to talk, they will get some body else to talk about Arushi murder. CBI is investigating the matter, but some channels feel that viewers are interested in knowing every detail everyday.

Indian Politicians And The Communal card

Politicians around the world are always looking for opportunities that will get them votes. In India, the politicians are making this as a fine art but something that is very dangerous for India.

The recent discussion about the India- US nuclear deal has brought out this reality very openly. Some politicians have said that India should not enter into a deal with the United States, which is fighting Muslims in Iraq. This is a surprise for me. First of all the United States is not fighting a war with Muslims. It is fighting a war with terrorists. Secondly what is good for Indians is good for Indian Muslims.

If the deal makes more power available to Indians it will also reach Muslims. The power generated will not be only for Non Muslims. I do not know whether to cry or to laugh at this kind of argument by the politicians that the deal is bad for Muslim in India or that the Muslims in India are opposed to the deal.

The fact of the matter is that Indian Muslims are looking for opportunities to grow, educate, increase their income and share the wealth that is being created in resurgent India. It is a sorry state of affairs the politicians say anything to get votes irrespective of the harm that will do to the nation.

Today I saw a politician on the television saying that he will never support the deal. The reason being that according to him George Bush is destroying Muslims around the world. Why this kind of an argument. It is as if President Bush can be called by any name or blamed for anything. The only thing he did was to remove Saddam Hussein from Iraq. Saddam was a dictator and Bush had no business going to Iraq. But that does not mean that Bush is destroying Muslims all over the world.

India- What Are The Priorities Of The Government

For last one month it seems that the government is only worries about the nuclear deal. Every discussion is about the deal and it looks like that the whole country is worried about the deal the truth is different. Most of the Indians are least concerned about what happens to the nuclear deal. They are more worried about the following.

Inflation has been rising everyday. Those with limited income find it very difficult to meet the ends because of the rising prices. The finance minister says s that he is worried about the rising prices. This sounds funny. He is not supposed to be only worried but do something to control it. That is his job, which he is not doing. The lower classes are in a very bad situation and the middle class Indians are finding that the prosperity is no match to the rising prices.

The Kashmir situation is becoming worse. With the land allotment row for Amarnath, violence has broken out again in the valley. The central government is doing nothing about this except watching. The more delay is made the more the situation will go out of control.

The stock markets are diving everyday. People are horrified watching their value going down everyday. Many companies are getting quoted at unbelievably low prices. The rising oil prices in the International market will hammer the market lower. What is government doing about this? Nothing to say the least -recently Mr. Ahluwalia said that Indians would have to learn to live in the high oil prices regime. That is no comfort. The government can surely do something about the rising prices.

The job of the government is to help people live comfortably. The government is not supposed to lecture us about the international situation and the effect on us. It is for the government to look at everything and take steps to make life easy for the citizens.

India- Nuclear Deal And Opposition

The failure of Indian political parties to come to a consensus about the nuclear deal shows a lack of will in the country to implement policies that are good for India. The opposition of left is understood to be in the context of the USA. What about the BJP? Let us discuss that.

1. BJP is all for the deal. In fact if it was in power and the deal was offered it would have accepted it without any opposition and shown it as a victory.

2. The problem with BJP is not with the deal but the fact that the Indian national Congress has clinched the deal. BJP does not want to give credit to its opposition for the deal hence it is raising objections about the deal.

3. BJP has some idea that its supporters in the middle class will vote against it because of BJP's opposition to the deal. It is a well-known fact that the Indian middle class supports the USA whole-heartedly.

4. BJP plans to shout more about the rising prices rather than the nuclear deal The rising prices have come as heaven sent for the BJP.

Indian political parties have yet to mature. They oppose anything proposed by the ruling Govt. even if it is good for the country. There only objective is to grab the power. For them nation matters little. What they are always looking for is power. Why Mayawati calls the deal as anti Muslim is beyond comprehension. The deal has nothing to do with any religion. This opposition to the deal because it may be against the Muslim desire shows utter lack of morality. It will also increase the divide between Hindus and Muslims in India. It is time for Muslims to get up and say that they have nothing against the deal. Unless they do so Hindus will see them in a different light and political parties will again increase the divide further.

India- Reality Shows And Children

Here was the girl, a teenager of 16 years on the stage. She was waiting for the comments of judges on her performance. First came judge number one and started a scathing attack on her performance. The child began crying. I thought that they will try to find out why she was crying and try to console her, pamper her and if needed send her home. Nothing like that happened. The child was alone crying on the stage and the second judge started criticizing her performance. The child was becoming hysterical and by that time the third judge was on her throat for giving a lousy performance.

The girl went home and next day went into coma. Not actual coma but something nearing that. After that the child was hospitalized and is trying to recover. I have seen the producer and the judges of the program defending themselves on the news channels. None of them has expressed any regret. They have been blaming the parents for sending a mentally unfit child to the program. This whole thing sounds sadistic. These people were getting some sadistic pleasure out of hammering a crying child. This was live on television in a civilized nation like India.

What do we call this? Should it not be called child abuse? What about the punishment to the producer and the judges? The child is suffering but they are happily going around giving interviews and defending their action. Why are all of us silently watching this and not demanding any action?

The responsible persons should be hauled up before a court of law and made to pay for their deeds. Unless that is done this kind of torture will continue. The television channels are looking for viewer-ship but that cannot be done this way. In my opinion this is inhuman and we all must protest very strongly.

India- Govt. Should Resign

There are many reasons why this UPA government should resign. Let us see why?

1. The UPA government has no idea about how to control inflation. The finance minister says that he is worried about the inflation. Does that mean anything? He is supposed to act to control it. That is why he is drawing his salary. The Prime Minister himself an economist is also only concerned and worried but seems to have no clue about what to do.

2. The nuclear deal is a real worry for the government. The Prime Minister has staked his prestige on signing the deal but finds no way to do it. If he has any sense of pride left he should resign on this issue. But he will not because others do not want to go for elections right now. What authority does the Prime Minister have? If none, then resign.

3. To survive the UPA is asking for support from its bitter enemies such as Samajwadi party. This is worst kind of opportunism. They do not know who are opposing them and who are with them. Everybody is changing sides after bitterly criticizing the other party. Today's sworn enemy is tomorrow's true friend. This is not only sad but also laughable.

4. The congress has tested defeat in all recent state elections. Gujarat and Karnataka have shown congress its true strength. Should the congress not agree that it is losing support quickly and the public wants the UPA to go?

5. The left does not want the BJP to come into power. Therefore it is supporting the present government. But the left is opposing it everywhere. It is not allowing any reforms. It criticizes the government for all its policies. But the government still wants support from the left so that it can be in power. This is nothing but shameless.

Earlier this government resigns better it will be for India.

India- Does It Need Presidential Form Of Government?

India got independence in 1947. At that time Indians adopted parliamentary form of Government. This was similar to that in Great Britain. This system has served India well for some decades. But does it continue doing that now? Are Indians blocking their progress with parliamentary form of Government? This is a question that is being asked many times and no body has the guts to discuss about this in parliament and go ahead with change if found suitable. Why- because all parties feel that with Presidential Form Of Government they will lose whatever clout they have in government. How has parliamentary system fared in last ten years? It requires discussion.

During last decade India has been having coalition governments. A small group whose support is vital to its survival can dictate this kind of government. A party with about ten MPs can make the government do what it wants. Let us talk of the nuclear deal. There is a general view that India will benefit with it. But the strong opposition from left has made it impossible to go ahead. Why is the left opposing it- because it is being offered by the USA. Had it been offered by China or Russia, left would have agreed to the deal even if it were not in national interest. In the garb of national interest, left parties are enjoying a huge ego trip and blocking every progress possible. This would not have been possible if India had Presidential Form Of Government.

Today the Prime Minister looks without any power to do anything except having non stop talks with the left and trying to convince them. The left parties threaten to withdraw support every other day but do not do so. They are playing a waiting game that will ultimately show the Government in a very bad light. But the situation is so complex that Congress party does not know what it should do. It is a tragedy of highest proportion.

India-Petrol Prices

Why does the Govt. not reduce excise and other duties on Petroleum products. The money it collects is ostensibly spent for good of nation but it manages to fill pockets of corrupt politicians and officials. Rajiv Gandhi had given a figure of 10% as the money that reaches the beneficiaries.

Now the Govt. wants more money for corrupt elements.

India- Press and human lives

The press in India has shown great interest in deaths by killing. Every case is being investigated by the journalists in entirety. This is more true of deaths in the NCR region than in other regions of India. How many of us have seen the press taking keen interest in cases in other states? Even Prof. Sabharwals's case was not investigated that thoroughly as is being done with Nitish Katara and Aarushi case.

I sometimes wonder that the press is ignoring many other realities of India and focussing on sensational news emanating from Delhi and nearby. Honor killing in Haryana does not invite so much attention, why? Vidharbha farmers die everyday but you will find a para in newspapers and nothing more. Why?

Electronic media seems to be looking at cases that will draw maximum TRPs. They think that investigating farmer deaths and the reasons may not draw as much attention as why NOIDA police did not trace the body of Hemraj for two days. In farmers case they will have to travel all the way to the villages of Vidharbha nd talk to people. They may have to investigate about the package that was announced by the Prime Minister and also meet numerous Govt. officers. That calls for lot of hard work in the heat of Vidharbha. For a case in Delhi they may continue sitting in their air conditioned offices and talk to different people and try and make a story. A reporter may be asked to go and find out details in the courts or residences. But that is not as tough as traveling to villages with no star hotels.

The main point is that we as public are interested in all kinds of affairs and liaisons and goof ups by the police. we are ourselves insensitive to the hardships of farmers and other people who may get killed in villages. If we stop watching the sensational cases and demand that other important news be also given prominence, the press may change. I am not saying that a murder taking place in Delhi is not bad. What I am saying is that a murder or suicide in other parts of India especially villages are equally bad.

India- tourism

Tourism will be hit badly by Gujjar agitation. Who likes to visit a country where thousands can stop rails and block roads without any fear? India deserves the drop in tourist traffic.

India- society- Gujjars

The Gujjars are holding the Govt. to ransom in Rajasthan. they are destroying public property without any worry. This can happen only in India.

Media exposure

The way in which media is following Aarushi murder for TRPs is despicable. A girl was killed. A man was killed along with her. the father is in jail for this. Court has not given any judgment but ?

India- Television- Use Of Honorifics

We are evolving or going back in ages? Or trying to follow Americans in every sphere? This is about the way the commentators and moderators address people on television. No honorific is used. Everyone is addressed by his/her first name. I think of a dialog which Ms. Barkha Dutt may have with Gandhiji, Nehruji , Sardar Patel and Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

She would speak thus-

All right Gandhi,
what do you say about Nehru's thoughts?

Come on Nehru,
you know what Gandhi meant.

Sardar, what is your opinion.

Indira, what do you say about this
and so on.

Address a man or woman of any age without using any honorific. We speak of our culture when it suits us and forget our culture equally fast.

Indian billionares do not donate

Has anybody heard about any billionaire of India making donations like gates or Buffet? I do not know why, but they do not donate liberally. India is being aided by Gates Foundation to fight AIDS. What should I say about Indian billionaires? do they like this fact? Are they not unhappy that gates has to come and help India?

as far as they do not have to part with money, they are not unhappy about anything.

Congress leaders- Test them for loyalty

All the Congress leaders should undergo loyalty test. CBI may be asked to conducts these tests using lie detectors and other modern methods such as Narco. Once the tests are done the disloyal leaders should be thrown out of the party and most loyal leaders be promoted.

But for God's sake in a country where farmers commit suicide this nonsense must stop forever.

What if Bush had been asked this about India?

I wonder about the comment of Bush about food shortages where he mentioned both India and China as part of the reason. Suppose he had only mentioned China? Would Indians have felt bad?

What if somebody had asked G. Bush - whether Indian prosperity mattered as far as food shortages was concerned and he had answered that no- in India millions still go hungry.

How would we have reacted as Indians?
